Did you know that more than 75 percent of adults have some level of periodontal disease? Commonly called gum disease, this condition occurs when plaque, the sticky substance that constantly forms on your teeth, builds up at the gum line and hardens in to tartar. Plaque and tartar byproducts irritate and damage the gums, which support teeth. As the disease progresses, deep pockets form between gums and teeth to allow more bacteria to collect at the gum line, and this leads to infection.
Left untreated, periodontal disease can cause tooth loss. Studies have linked gum disease to other serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and complications with diabetes. During your checkups, our hygienist will evaluate your gums for signs of trouble. If we find periodontal disease, we may can suggest non-surgical treatment, such as Arestin antibiotic therapy, scaling, and root planing.
